Detoxifying Natural Lemonade

The most simple and useful home recipe is lemonade. It is good for your health but it is also one of life’s little pleasures on a warm and sunny day.

Lemon is high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids, which are easily used up by the body. Making a healthy and natural lemonade recipe is an effective way to help restore biologically available vitamin C. Vitamin C is a much needed immune modulator and free radical neutralizer. The astringent properties of lemon juice also have an antiseptic and cleansing effect on the liver and digestive system.

Lemon juice also is very alkalizing to the blood. Encouraging alkalinity will help keep your immune system strong and your body healthy. It will help improve your digestive system and has a detoxifying effect on your liver.  Drink lemonade anytime you need to refresh and detox.

6 to 8 large lemons

2 tablespoons of raw agave nectar or raw honey per lemon

Sprig fresh mint

Water, as needed

250 ml plain kombucha (optional)

  1. Juice the lemons by hand, using a lemon juicer and pour into a glass jug. Add raw agave or honey to taste and dilute with as much water as you prefer.
  2. Add a sprig of mint and 250 ml of plain kombucha.
  3. Place in the fridge until serving.

Storing the lemonade in glass will keep it fresher for longer. Adding kombucha will add extra health benefits plus make it effervescent.

How much lemonade does this recipe make?

The Mayo Clinic says kombucha can cause stomach upset and is usually brewed in unsterilized conditions.

It is rewarding but quite finicky. The link below is how I do it. Something quicker and easier but much less well known is Water Kefir or Japanese Water Crystals. You get that same bubbly result!

would love to know how to brew my own kombucha!

Kombucha is a fermented drink made from tea, sugar and a special mushroom (kombucha). The mushroom eats the sugar, which creates the bubbles. There are plenty of companies that bottle it now, in many flavours especially in the US but you can make your own. It has a fresh and tangy flavour a bit like cider. Use a plain one to mix the lemon juice with- it tastes amazing and has the added health benefits.
