Why am I so addicted to chocolate?

There can be many ways to answer this question.  What I find, is that the root of an addiction to chocolate tends to revolve around two things:

1)    Deprivation

Simply put: we want what we can’t have.  I want you to try an experiment: for the next 2 months, eat chocolate as much as want all day and all evening.  Just eat it, and fully allow yourself to enjoy it.  After 2 months, what do you think might happen?  The chocolate will lose its power over you.  When you deprive yourself of a specific food, that food is exalted to an almost holy level.  You can’t get it out of your mind.  You must have it and you must have it often.  But when you fully allow yourself to eat a food whenever you feel like it, then it becomes like any other food you allow yourself to eat – it’s just food.

2)    Emotions

I have a question for you: what do you love so much about chocolate?  What does it give you?  Often answers to this question include words such as ‘sweet’, ‘comforting’, or ‘calming’.  And my reply to these answers is: when you crave chocolate, it is these words that you are really craving.  When do you usually crave chocolate?  Is it a time in your day when you really desire some ‘sweetness’ or ‘comfort’?  Is it commonly when you are stressed after a long work day and want some time to yourself to ‘calm’ down?  Take a look at your life and see where you might benefit from adding some of these words to your life.  Add them in, and I assure you, your chocolate addiction will gradually fade away.

Chocolate, like anything else, is good in variation. Eating it too often causes us to not notice is subtle flavours, because we are used to them. On the other hand, eating one piece every once in a while allows the chocolate piece to retain its character, because our taste buds have not become numb to an ordinary habit. I recommend sucking on a dark piece of chocolate until it dissolves from your mouth completely. Focus on the flavours, the texture, and the feeling that the chocolate gives you. Yay for conscious eating! :) (I've found that this, as opposed to chewing the chocolate, allows me to make sure that I am fully enjoying what I am doing/eating, and limits my desire for more afterward, because my senses have been fully satisfied ~ through consciousness) -Y

dark chocolate (70% and higher) is always the best form of chocolate to consume - high in antioxidants, lower in simple sugars, not additional saturated fats (ie milk chocolate) ... 1 square a day has actually been recommended by some nutritionists as a way to help with weight management (curb dessert cravings)

I love chocolate, especially dark. I can eat one square and be fully satisfied, mainly because I don't deprive myself and have that square when I really feel like it.
I've noticed though that it becomes a craving when I've had a rough day / moment. Like right now for instance. It feels like I need the stuff. That's when I have the choice. Have the damn square or not. And if I indulge, I have the choice to feel guilty about it or not. And I go for the right solution for me at this very moment.
I'll probably have this square when I get home ;-)
