Hello Gaia!
You know how sometimes the right people enter our lives at the right time? This week I'm honored to share one of our recent partners... and I have a feeling that, for quite a few of you, this will be one of these times.
First off, a quick story about my own history with doctors and health. Once upon a time, I was certain that Western medicine created more problems than it solved. I stubbornly said I'd rather die than visit a hospital.
Really, I thought,
there's nothing that a homeopath can't treat.
Careful what you wish for! I was so set in my beliefs that I almost
did die as a result. A week on an IV drip convinced me that technology is a good thing. :) Still, my heart was with alternative therapies—I believe in embracing the whole human, and treating the person rather than the disease.
I felt torn. The choice seemed black and white, and neither one fit.
Fast forward a few years, and Functional Medicine came into my life. FM is approach that felt perfect to me—a whole-systems perspective that uses the advancements of science to address healing rather than 'a cure.' At last.
Our latest partner, Mark Hyman, is one of the pioneers of this field. So you can see why I'm honored to introduce him.
Dr. Hyman just came out with a new book: UltraMind: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First.
UltraMind applies Functional Medicine to symptoms you might be familiar with, such as late-night binging, over-eating, insomnia, ADD, and those low-grade anxieties and addictions that can be so hard to shake. He looks at them from a holistic approach,
and incorporates the latest scientific discoveries. It's fascinating stuff, and I'm sure some of you will find it lifechanging. :)
If you're interested, buying a copy from the link above will help out our lovely community, but even if you're only curious it's worth a visit, as you can scroll down for plenty of information about the systems approach to health and some
fascinating videos on antidepressants and the role of nutrition in psychological well-being.
So go have a look, and please please please feel free to ping me for my own (later) story about recovery using the FM approach. You'd be surprised to learn what a few amino acid supplements can do to one's outlook on the world. :)
To bright-eyes and bushy-tails,
