On her talk show, Oprah used to repeat this quote of Angelou's often. It intrigued me, but I never understood what it meant. But after years of getting myself into situations and relationships that ended with me saying, “Why does this always happen to me?” it occurred to me what Angelou and Oprah meant. People show you who they are the first few times you meet them. They do this with their actions. It doesn't matter what people say. It's what they do. Actions always speak louder than words.

So really, people have no business saying, “Why does this always happen to me.” The information that will predict the future is there from the beginning. We just need to pay attention.
