Quotes about Cinema

"The Secret Name of Cinema is Transformation...Transform, transform, anything everything - stairways into planets, buttercups into navels, icebergs into elephants - everything, everywhere; the old scene renewed by seeing the unseen, seen anew; transformed."

To grasp and hold a vision, that is the very essence of successful leadership-not only on the movie set where I learned it, but everywhere.

You must know that in any moment a decision you make can change the course of your life forever: the very next person stand behind in line or sit next to on an airplane, the very next phone call you make or receive, the very next movie you see or book you read or page you turn could be the one single thing that causes the floodgates to open, and all of the things that you've been waiting for to fall into place.

Our growing ability to eliminate the slow-moving aspects of entertainment and go hopping from one peak to another is not without cost. Stand-up comics, movie-makers and others who earn their living entertaining no longer "waste" time with setups and plot development, lest we reach for the remote and click them off our screen. The result is a loss of subtlety, anticipation and nuance and, in the process, a coarsening of our discourse.

Young people view an average of 16 to 17 hours of television weekly, beginning as early as age 2. When video games and video cassette movies are added, some teens may be spending as many as 35 to 55 per week. More families own a television than a telephone.

We ran out of new ideas somewhere around 1978, since then we've been repeating ourselves. Same songs, same movies, same clothes, even the same crimes. Like this Robie guy, no imagination. He's just part of the rhythm and the rhyme of all this repeating. This is 1996, here comes the millennium. But people are nervous, they're on edge, they're jumpy. This is supposed to be something new. But we can't look that in the face, can we? So what do we do? We grab a little something from one year in the fifties and a little of something else from some other year, maybe late sixties. We think we're creating something new and different, but really, all we're doing is just repeating the same old . . . nothing. We're all copycats.

You know one of the ways that movies are still better than playback? Because the music comes up, there's credits, and you always know when it's over.

It is true that we have not deliberately or wholly abandoned the Christian element in our tradition, but does that element count with us as it once did? Is the moral tone of the nation - its politics, its business life, its literature, its theatre, its movies, its radio networks, its television stations - Christian?

The only power source a book needs is you. If you have to leave for a few minutes you have not lost the story. It is waiting for you when you return. You can pick up a book and resume reading at any time, after a few minutes, a few days, even a few years. A television picture or a movie might be lost forever, but your book is waiting.

Looking at the championship-winning quarterbacks, Edwards remembered their particular talents: Steve Young: Here's a guy that is really a talent. He's the best athlete we ever had. He could run, he developed into a good thrower. He's smart. He's intense. He could make it in the movies. Really, he's got it all. He was coachable, but he had his own ideas. He never let up, not even in practice. I'd take Steve Young every year.

An unsolicited email arrived which said, "I recently saw a bumper sticker that said, 'Thank me, I voted for Clinton-Gore.' So I sat down and reflected on that and I am sending my 'Thank you' for what you have done, specifically: 1. Thank you for introducing us to Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky, Dolly Kyle Browning, Kathleen Willey and of course Juanita Broaddrick, who told NBC that you raped her. Are there any others that we should know about? 2. Thank you for teaching my 8 yr. old about oral sex. I had really planned to wait until he was about 10 or so to discuss it with him, but now he knows more about it than I did as a senior in college. The cigar thing was also neat for the kids. 3. Thank you for showing us that sexual harassment in the work place (especially the White House) and on the job is OK, and all you have to know is what the meaning of "IS" is. It really is great to know that certain sexual acts are not sex and one person may have sex while the other involved does NOT have sex. Monica said frequently that while you were on the phone, she would work at one end and you at the other. What productivity! 4. Thank you for reintroducing the concept of impeachment to a new generation and demonstrating that the ridiculous plot of the movie "Wag the Dog" could be plausible after all. The people of the Sudan, Afghanistan and Serbia are all running to rent the videos, now that you made them part of the story. 5. Thanks for making Jimmy Carter look competent, Gerald Ford look graceful, Richard Nixon look honest, Lyndon Johnson look truthful and John Kennedy look moral. 6. Thank you for the 72 House and Senate witnesses who have pleaded the 5th amendment and the 17 witnesses who have fled the country to avoid testifying about Democratic fund raising. 7. Thank you for the 19 charges, 8 convictions and 4 imprisonments from the whitewater "mess" and the 55 criminal charges and 32 criminal convictions (so far) in the other "Clinton" scandals. 8. Thanks for remembering the families of the many deceased people who once were your friends, who served you and died so young and suddenly: Vince Foster, Jerry Parks, Ron Brown, Admiral Boorda, Les Aspin, Barbara Alice Wiese, Mary Mahoney, Jim McDougal et al." To wit, I offer a reply. . . .
