It is the denial of death that is partially responsible for people
living empty, purposeless lives; for when you live as if you'll live
forever, it becomes too easy to postpone the things you know that you must do.
Quotes about Denial
"Of all the weaknesses little men rail against, there is none that they are more apt to ridicule than the tendency to believe. And of all the signs of a corrupt heart and a feeble head, the tendency of incredulity is the surest. Real philosophy seeks rather to solve than to deny."
She's in that state of mind that she wants to deny something -only she doesn't know what to deny!
The denial of suffering is, in fact a better definition of illness than its acceptance.
Denial is always the first step in integrating a horrifying painful reality.
The truth about human beings is, above all other forms of truth, something far too susceptible to our own willful and subjectivist distortions; by nature we never JUST LET SUCH A THING BE, or accept it as it is. Of all the decisive and strategic things that an intelligent human being needs to know about human beings, primary on the list would be this: human beings are overwhelmingly profoundly RESISTANT to knowing the truth about human nature. The one creature in all of organic nature that is capable of KNOWING its own nature is also, paradigmatic over all other creatures, the one most IN DENIAL about that nature. To ask of mortals that they should "know themselves" is little more than a cruel joke, japing at their crippled mentality and personality. Their grasp of this structural perversity or contrariety within human nature is the basis of all Greek wisdom, their aristic "misanthropy" or principled and profound distrust of human beings as pseudophiliacs. All that human beings are willing to call "truth" (for the most part) is some saccharine or cosmetic sweetness and light, some soporific opiate against all in human existence that might demand the utmost self-discipline, rationality, self-mastery, or spirituality from them.
The weather today is an increasing trend towards denial.
Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.
You did not come here to conquer flesh. You came here to live in it. You came here to be part of it, not to destroy it, not to repress it and not to conquer it. If you are not one with your body you will be owned. If you go into social consciousness from an image standpoint you are owned also. ...If you cannot see the world and hear the world then you can be fully controlled. These mystery schools, all of your religions, all of your dogmas, all of these that have secrets, all have penalties. Every one of them will take your life away; they will take the love away from you which is worse than taking your life. The only school that exists is LIFE and that is no mystery....Why are you not yet living it? (pg 422-424)
Within your beings, always simply remember, if you follow no other truth, follow the truth that within your being is called joy. If you follow that , you're always going to be right where you need to be, and you will always have life within your being. That's where you need to be. ...when you are faced with something that gives you fear, realize that fear is of man's mind- not God's. So realize that within your being you already have everything you need to go home. (p437) Joy is the fastest way to bypass the circuitry you have with your subpersonalities. (p166)
One popular human strategy for dealing with difficulty is autosuggestion: when something nasty pops up, you convince yourself it is not there, or you convince yourself it is pleasant rather than unpleasant. The Buddha's tactic is quite the reverse. Rather than hide it or disguise it, the Buddha's teaching urges you to examine it to death. Buddhism advises you not to implant feelings that you don't really have or avoid feelings that you do have. If you are miserable you are miserable; that is the reality, that is what is happening, so confront that. Look it square in the eye without flinching. When you are having a bad time, examine that experience, observe it mindfully, study the phenomenon and learn its mechanics. The way out of a trap is to study the trap itself, learn how it is built. You do this by taking the thing apart piece by piece. The trap can't trap you if it has been taken to pieces. The result is freedom.
Never underestimate the power of denial.
