All unhappiness is caused by our trying to be limited, to be an ego. The more we are our Self, the happier we are. We will never be completely happy until we are completely being our Self.
Lester Levenson
Quotes about Ego
Is the ego good or bad? Neither. It is a reactive mechanism to our past experiences. It is only interested in physical survival, not our spiritual growth. Do not resist it - it can be used as a tool.
God Transcends all conceptuality. Only ego presumes that the All Pervading Divine Presence could be reduced to words.
"We all share the wound of fragmentation. And we can all share in the cure of unification. Healing is the unification of all our forces -- the powers of being, feeling, kwowing, and seeing.
I look in the mirror and I look out the window and I see myself and others struggling to be in our bodies. Struggling to know who we are and what we need. To like ourselves, rather than wanting to be somebody else, or somewhere else. I see our inability to relate, to communicate from the heart, to overcome our distance and alienation from one another. I see us avoiding each other's eyes, at a loss to know what others need. I see people searching for direction, trying to summon up their personal power, longing for the strength to be independent.
The wounded healer in me knows that healing our driven selves comes from our ability to empower our bodies, hearts, minds, souls, and spirits once more, bringing them into vital unity. Spiritual healing means taking responsibility for being a whole person. We have to take responsibility for being a body, for having a heart, for possessing a mind, for awakening our soul, for opening to our spirit. We need to do right by our body, purify our relationships, use our mind for creative freedom and not enslavement, free the soul from the ego, and undertake the spiritual journey. A whole person is an inspired person, one who embodies the spirit.
Disease is inertia. Healing is movement. If you put the body in motion, you will change. You are meant to move: from flowing to staccato, through chaos into lyrical and back into the stillness from which all movement comes.
If you let your heart be moved, be open to the risk and the adventure of feelings, letting them work through to completion, you will change. Tears turn into smiles, anger into embraces.
If you free your mind to experience and complete each of your life cycles, integrating their teachings and tasks, you will change. It's when you stop moving through life that you get caught out of place, that you react to adult situations with childhood emotions. Moving completely through your life makes you whole.
If you awaken your soul, you will change. Engage your characters. Watch yourself act them out. Master them, and you're free to be, feel, think, and act as your distinct self.
The spirit in motion heals, expands, circles in and out of the body, moving through the layers of consciiousness from inertia to ecstacy. Open to the spirit, and you will be transformed.
Movement is my medium and my metaphor. I know that if a wave of energy is allowed to complete itself, it yields a whole new wave, and in fact that is all I really know. Riding these waves means joining the cosmic dance that, as Dante says, 'moves the sun and the other stars.'"
The Universe knows what it's doing. So don't develop a big ego, and don't be afraid. (p207)
You're the only one who knows when you're using things to protect yourself and keep your ego together and when you're opening and letting things fall apart, letting the world come as it is - working with it rather than struggling against it. You're the only one who knows.
Waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be.
...but with my clamoring ego solidly in place, I considered the title, 'Memories of a Failed Nobody'.
To the ego, the present moment hardly exists. Only past and future are considered important. This total reversal of the truth accounts for the fact that in the ego mode the mind is so dysfunctional. It is always concerned with keeping the past alive, because without it - who are you?
To be identified with your mind is to be trapped in time: the compulsion to live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation.
When you are present, you can allow the mind to be as it is without getting entangled in it. The mind in itself is a wonderful tool. Dysfunction sets in when you seek your self in it and mistake it for who you are.
Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to "die before you die" — and find that there is no death.
The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, person and family history, belief systems, and often also political, nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications.
None of these is you.
The pain that you create now is always some form of nonacceptance, some form of unconscious resistance to what is. On the level of thought, the resistance is some form of judgment. On the emotional level, it is some form of negativity. The intensity of the pain depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind.
Personalities don't love. They want something.
The mind's job is to validate what it thinks.
The ultimate freedom from the nonexistent ego is to see that it is actually irrelevant.
Your will is the ego part of you that believes you're separate from others, separate from what you'd like to accomplish or have, and separate from God. It also believes that you are your acquisitions, achievements, and accolades. This ego will wants you to constantly acquire evidence of your importance... On the other hand, your imagination is the concept of Spirit within you. ...with imagination, we have the power to be anything we desire to be.
As William Penn put it: "Those people who are not governed by God will be ruled by tyrants." Remember... that those tyrants are often self-imposed roadblocks of your lower self at work.
Ego is simply an idea of who you are that you carry around with you.
All emanates from Source! ...You're not this body and its accomplishments. You are the observer. Notice it all; and be grateful for the abilities you've been given, the motivation to achieve, and the stuff you've accumulated. But give all the credit to the power of intention, which brought you into existence...
With the disappearance of God the Ego moves forward to become the sole divinity.
Eventually I was disgusted of how fake most people live their lives. How sturdily set they are on concepts and Idea's, not even their own. And live their lives by them, without regarding their validity upon their own lives.
Not a self made image, of how you should be. (the Ego) But worse, an image of how you should be.
If you ever want to drop a self image, which is never who you really are. You will need to know how it has gotten there. It will take time and effort to self explore.
Souls do not need to be saved. Egos need clarification.
We truly become special only when we believe, and act as if, we aren't!
Reality is wrapped within a fantasy when your life is interpreted by your ego.
. . . even the enlightened person . . . is never more than his own limited ego before the One who dwells within him, whose form has no knowable boundaries, who encompasses him on all sides, fathomless as the abysms of the earth and vast as the sky.
When we get out of the glass bottles of our ego,
and when we escape like squirrels turning in the
cages of our personality
and get into the forests again,
we shall shiver with cold and fright
but things will happen to us
so that we don't know ourselves.
Truth is perspective; absolute truth is ego.
Love is a brand of egoism that ignores the feelings of it's mark, whiling insisting on it's own selfish demands.
