As a scientist, objectivity is one of my most deeply held values. If we could just try harder, I once thought, surely we could each see the world as others see it and learn to respect one another's views more readily. But I learned from the Pirahas, our expectations, our culture, and our experiences can render even perceptions of the environment nearly incommensurable cross-culturally.

Suffering is meant to teach a lesson. Whether the lesson is meant for an individual, a group, a culture, a nation or a planet depends on the suffering. The nature of suffering is that it shall continue until the lesson is learned.

The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson.
I am at the same time both teacher and student mostly teaching myself or at least learning how to learn which may be the most important lesson of all in which case I may be my own best teacher because if I pay close enough attention to myself then I can see my own pitfalls as well as my strengths as long as I ALSO notice the times when my ego is involved and I then transcend my own ignorance and barriers to learning.
