Buddhas continue to live on through their teachings as dharma bodies. Their spirits become manifest in the sangha (spiritual community) where their teachings are passed on.
The Buddha shared his teachings so that everyone, without exception, could reach the same supreme state of liberation that he had attained through practice and effort.
After 48 years, I have said nothing.
45. Faith receives. Love gives.
One must not receive without faith. One must not give without love.
Therefore, in order to receive, we believe, and in order to give truly, we love.
But if one gives without love, he does not benefit from such giving.
48. A pearl, even if it is cast down into the mud, is not despised. And if one covers it with balsam, it does not
become more valuable. But it is always valuable to its owner.
It is the same with the Sons of God: wherever They may be, They are still of value to Their Father.

I transmit but do not create. I place my trust in the teachings of antiquity.
My teachings are easy to understand
and easy to put into practice.
Yet your intellect will never grasp them,
and if you try to practice them, you'll fail.
My teachings are older than the world.
How can you grasp their meaning?
If you want to know me,
look inside your heart.
However innumerable sentient beings are, I vow to save them; however inexhaustible the passions are, I vow to master them; however limitless the teachings are, I vow to study them; however infinite the Buddha-truth is, I vow to attain it.
From all kinds of flowers,
Seek teachings everywhere,
Like a deer that finds
A quiet place to graze,
Seek Seclusion to digest
