Ever since learning I wasn’t the only unreal person in the world, I’d developed an annoying habit of studying people to determine their true ontological status. I studied people in class, the library, the cafeteria, my dorm, around campus, while running the Gargoyle Castle Loop. Now, under the influence of acid, I began to suspect everyone was unreal. That behind all the masks and makeup, the smiles and laughter, the quips and repartees, there was a good chance of finding absolutely nothing.

Believe those who are seeking the truth.  Doubt those who find it.

If you seek the path to the truth, leave your ego at the start of your journey.

Philosophy exists in profoundest opposition to rhetoric, which is speaking for the sake of producing or controlling some effect in others' perceptions.  Philosophy is about the caustic or cauterizing effect of the truth, not the currying of sensibilities.

Whoever was responsible for the idea of dividing self into lower and higher parts committed a serious crime against humanity. This division has given rise to the notion that the lower (ego and immature) self must be overcome while the higher (unitive and whole) self must be sought as the goal of human realization. Out of ignorance, I too clung to this notion because I believed it was this higher self that would be united with God for all eternity. It took a long time before my experiences led me to doubt this conviction and, at the same time, let in the possibility that this was not the whole truth and that there was still further to go.

I have had Muslim friends at various times of my life. They have proven to be very decent and joyful people serious about charity and devoted to their faith but at the same time, fun to be with. I do not view Muslims as the enemy but as companion seekers of the truth. Their truth may be different than mine but so is everyone else's. Their truth it is no less beautiful and correct for them as mine is for me.
