Drink from the presence of saints,
not from those other jars.
Any wine will get you high.
Judge like a king, and choose the purest,
There are thousands of wines
that can take over our minds.
Then sing as Martin Luther sang, As Doctor Martin Luther sang, "Who loves not wine, woman and song, He is a fool his whole life long."
I am falser than vows made in wine.
O thou invisible spirit of wine! if thou hast no name to be known by, let us call thee devil!
The supreme courage of life is the courage of the soul. It is living, day by day, sincerely, steadfastly, serenely,-despite all opinions, all obstacles, all opposition. It means the wine of inspiration from the crushed grapes of our sorrows. This courage makes the simplest life, great; it makes the greatest life-sublime. It means the royal dignity of fine individual living.
Wine comes in at the mouth And love comes in at the eye That's all we shall know for truth Before we grow old and die.
I intend to die in a tavern; let the wine be placed near my dying mouth, so that when the choirs of angels come, they may say, "God be merciful to this drinker!"
Young people view an estimated 10,000 violent acts each year. A recent National Television Violence Study examined nearly 10,000 hours of television programming over a three-year period and found that 51 percent contained violence, with children's programming being the most violent. Each year, teenagers view nearly 15,000 sexual references, innuendoes, and jokes of which less than 70 will deal with abstinence, birth control, sexually-transmitted diseases, or pregnancy. The so-called family hour of prime time television (8 to 9 pm) contain eight sexual incidents per hour, more than four times as much as in 1976. Alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drugs are present in 70 percent of prime time network dramatic programs, 38 out of 40 top grossing movies, and half of all music videos. For every "just say no" or "know when to say when" public service announcements, teens will view 25 to 50 beer and wine advertisements. American Academy of Pediatrics, "Article Underscores Media Impact on Children and Adolescents," press release, 5 January 1999.
There was a young lady of Kent, Who said that she knew what it meant When men asked her to dine, Gave her cocktails and wine, She knew what it meant-but she went!
Moderately drunk, coffee removes vapours from the brain, occasioned by fumes of wine, or other strong liquors; eases pains in the head, prevents sour belchings, and provokes appetite.
As Joseph Was A-Walking As Joseph was a-walking He heard Angels sing, "This night shall be born Our Heavenly King. "He neither shall be born In house nor in hall, Nor in the place of paradise, But in an ox-stall. "He shall not be clothed In purple nor pall; But all in fair linen, As wear babies all. "He shall not be rocked In silver nor gold, But in a wooden cradle That rocks on the mould. "He neither shall be christened In milk nor in wine, But in pure spring-well water Fresh spring from Bethine." Mary took her baby, She dressed Him so sweet, She laid Him in a manger, All there for to sleep. As she stood over Him She heard Angels sing, "Oh, bless our dear Saviour Our Heavenly King!"
Journey of the Magi "A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey: The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter." And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory, Lying down in the melting snow. There were times we regretted The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces, And the silken girls bringing sherbet. Then the camel men cursing and grumbling And running away, and wanting their liquor and women, And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters, And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly And the villages dirty and charging high prices: A hard time we had of it. At the end we preferred to travel all night, Sleeping in snatches, With the voices singing in our ears, saying That this was all folly. Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley, Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation, With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness, And three trees on the low sky. And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow. Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel, Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver, And feet kicking the empty wine-skins. But there was no information, and so we continued And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory. All this was a long time ago, I remember, And I would do it again, but set down This set down This: were we led all that way for Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly, We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, But had thought they were different; this Birth was Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death. We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death.
I wanna float with you on a cumulus cloud I wanna take you far away from this maddening crowd You can scratch up my back with your long fingernails We'll drink some weird wine and eat psychedelic snails.
Pleasure disappoints, possibility never. And what wine is so sparkling, who so fragrant, what so intoxicating, as possibility.
Good wine needs neither bush nor preface To make it welcome.
Your words are my food, your breath my wine. You are everything to me.
SONG You bound strong sandals on my feet, You gave me bread and wine, And sent me under sun and stars, For all the world was mine. Oh, take the sandals off my feet, You know not what you do, For all my world is in your arms, My sun and stars are you.
Christmas Carol The kings they came from out the south, All dressed in ermine fine; They bore Him gold and chrysoprase, And gifts of precious wine. The shepherds came from out the north, Their coats were brown and old; They brought Him little new-born lambs- They had not any gold. The wise men came from out the east, And they were wrapped in white; The star that led them all the way Did glorify the night. The angels came from heaven high, And they were clad with wings; And lo, they brought a joyful song The host of heaven sings. The kings they knocked upon the door, The wise men entered in, The shepherds followed after them To hear the song begin. The angels sang through all the night Until the rising sun, But little Jesus fell asleep Before the song was done.
One of the disadvantages of wine is that it makes a man mistake words for thoughts.
Wine makes a man better pleased with himself; I do not say that it makes him more pleasing to others.
All love at first, like generous wine, Ferments and frets until 'tis fine; But when 'tis settled on the lee, And from th' impurer matter free, Becomes the richer still the older, And proves the pleasanter the colder.
If you say, "Would there were no wine" because of the drunkards, then you must say, going on by degrees, "Would there were no steel," because of the murderers, "Would there were no night," because of the thieves, "Would there were no light," because of the informers, and "Would there were no women," because of adultery.
I'm like old wine. They don't bring me out very often, but I'm well preserved.
