Windfarm Wars (2008)


Once, Den Brook was just a stream meandering through some of Great Britain’s tranquil and ancient Devon farmland. Now, this idyllic backwater has become the scene of sabotage and trespass, mistrust and intrigue. It is all caused by the high drama of legal adversaries locked in a dispute that will determine the fate of the town and the proposed windfarm.

The film-makers’ cameras follow this story from beginning to end; through planning and protest, propaganda and polemic, seeing events from all perspectives. A revealing and gripping story builds surprising and confounding at every stage. The unique aspect of the film crew explores and exposes the truths and myths of a highly controversial energy resource – on shore wind-power.

In this opening episode, we meet passionate windfarm developer Rachel Ruffle and learn of her controversial plans for the Den Brook Windfarm. Adversaries and advocates quickly draw battle lines as a town is increasingly divided on this hot button issue.

The local authority has come to the decision to turn down planning permission for the Den Brook Windfarm which provokes further legal action. Meanwhile, a local resident pleads with the planning inspector on potential noise issues.

A year and a half later, a window to challenge, in the High Court, the planning inspector’s decision is coming to a close. At the 11th hour, Mike Hulme, the local resident who was initially friendly, brings forth the challenge.

With the apparent victory in the High Court, RES moves their construction plans forward. Dramatic events over the next few months lead to yet another Public Inquiry. Eventually, a final but controversial decision is made.
