Amasoya (2006)

Only available in Canada, United States

“When the last tree has been cut, the last river poisoned, the last fish captured, then you will discover that you cannot eat money.” – Amerindian prediction.

Who would consider soya as suspicious? As a symbol of vegetarian diet, soy is usually to be associated with nature, balance, and health. So what a surprise to be told that today this legume is putting the whole Amazon rainforest in jeopardy – with potentially devastating consequences. The soybean has become one of the most consumed products, especially since the mad cow epidemic ravaged several countries. At this point in time, there is a pressing need for increasing soybean production in order to tackle demand inflation. Consequently, huge fields are commandeered for soybean cultivation. But turning the rainforest into planting fields could cause spectacular harm to the whole continent and beyond.
