An estimated twenty percent of the population suffers from some kind of arthritis – rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout or fibromyalgia. Arthritis is more specifically defined as joint inflammation, and as such, foods that reduce inflammation are the major focus.
From the perspective of Oriental medicine, the cause of arthritis is a combination of a number of factors. If dampness is more pronounced, there’ll be swelling and edema, obesity, heaviness in the extremities, sluggishness and dull pain. If wind is the major problem, the pain is going to shift from spot to spot in the body, just like in nature when the wind shifts from place to place. And if heat is the major problem, there’s going to be swelling and inflammation in the joints.
