Becoming a Woman in Zanskar (2007)

Only available in Canada, United States

Palkit and Tenzin are best friends. Throughout their carefree childhoods they have never known anything other than their village surrounded by snow-peaked mountains. Yet, suddenly they’re about to enter adult life.

Tenzin, at 22, learns that her father has found her a husband from a neighboring village whom she has never met. Distressed and unhappy, she will nevertheless accept her fate. Palkit is 25 years old. To avoid getting married to an unknown man, she has chosen to become a nun and wishes to leave her family to enter a monastery in Dharam Sala, where the Dalai Lama resides. Her father however is deeply opposed to her decision and would like her to stay and help with the chores.

Two girls in the Himalayas: one “kidnapped” by her future husband, the other's head shaved as she enters the convent forever – all for the same goal, to become women.

What a wonderful story, happiness and sadness. I agree with the other comment regarding a follow up film to enlighten the viewers of the different paths each women took. A great film showing the world how different cultures live. Loved it and found the subject matter very enlightening.

I would love to see say 5years or more passed, so beautiful and insight into another world. Lets all realize too the nuns need support, their lives are hard and very simple, we in the West can send a little and it will be helpful over there.

I would like to see a follow up on this! This made me cry that these young girls only have these 2 options... This should not continue!

In all aspects, simply beautiful. The mountains provide such a dramatic backdrop & for all of their distance & snow, seem intimately part of the movie. Even the musk oxen & ponies are stars in this simple, profound story. How different lives are - as different as the scenery from places I have lived. This is how life goes on, in gratitude, prayer, tumult and beauty. Friendship, like family, survives the distance & becomes more precious. Thank you so much for making this available!

I was really enjoying this movie when suddenly about a half hour into the film, it stopped and wouldn't play again. It finally came on in a few moments later and I finished watching the film. It was a fascinating film about two women who chose two different paths in life. The one going through a wedding ritual against her own wishes to become a nun and the other going through the trials of life in order to become a nun. Fascinating photography made me feel I was right there in a forgotten world of the Himalayas, Zanskar. Beautiful film!
