The End Is My Beginning (2010)

Only available in Canada, United States

In this compelling biopic, Tiziano Terzani, long-time Spiegel magazine Asia correspondent and renowned author, invites his son Folco to his retreat, a small mountain village northwest of Florence. It turns into a very special visit: Tiziano is seriously ill with cancer and wants to tell his son the story of his life in the time remaining before his death.

Tiziano and Folco talk every day, reflecting on their own lives, discussing society, modern times, young people and the world. But death is omnipresent and thus a central theme of the film. With an impressive lightness, Tiziano, his son and Tiziano’s wife meet the nearing end without quarrelling or complaining.

Tiziano labels death a friend, as “the one new thing that can still happen to me.” An unusual story about the relationship between father and son, the fascinating life of Tiziano Terzani and, above all, bidding farewell.

Bruno Ganz, Elio Germano, Erika Pluhar, Andrea Osvárt, Nicolò Fitz-William Lay
Jo Baier
German and Italian, with English subtitles

I stumbled across this tonight and am so excited to be able to see this film. I happen to be friends with Folco, well our sons were school mates. I dreamt the most beautiful dream the night of Tiziano's passing. I knew the very next day he had died just like in my dream. I also had my first premonition which I shared with Folco that he would write/ complete his father's work/ book. It was very clear to me in my dream and I am so pleased to see that not only the book was done, but that it was turned into a movie.

A lovely film of oneness, and one mans realization that life's ending is its beginning... will have you crying, laughing... the entire gambit of human emotions will be yours to be felt. But most of all, your Spirit will recognize the truths held in this delightful film.
