Donald Baines (Kirk Douglas) is a successful Hollywood director nearing death. His life was filled with fame and riches but devoid of love. Haunted by the memory of the son he abandoned, Donald Baines is given the opportunity to see three views of his son's journey, each representing a different period of his son's life.

Donald bears witness to the impact his absence had on his son's life and in his own inability to find love. Ultimately Donald is offered the opportunity to alter the outcome of his son's life in this haunting yet beautiful tale of love and redemption.

the old man does not have to speak like a retard, this is so slow and hard to watch - i had to skip through it. and even that was hard to tolerate.

Fantastic film. It's amazing how we hide our feelings and the years just go by so fast and Life is so short. Half over by now at least. I have felt this way about someone and still do... true love, first love is an illusion or maybe not. Life is an amazing place to be. This film was something I needed to see.

Two movies, two gun scenes. this is not what I signed up for! I have had enough trauma in my life - I wanted to watch some positive spiritual uplifting visions... not this stuff... what makes it any better than mainstream TV? I will try one more video and then try to get my money back, never should have signed up for 3 months. Please tell me there are better films WITHOUT the violence!

In response to you,.
-ive given a lot of films 4 stars on here that were violence free, brilliant viewing.
Ive loved my gaiam experience. Just wish I could see more as its only the complete selection in the US.

My most heart-warming story, by far, was Healing. ...5 stars to that. ..Cant recommend it highly enough :) An Aussie masterpiece.

..I found this movie -Illusion- very tedious to begin with, &came back to it a few times over before watching it in its entirety.
It certainly helped once I realised how to turn captions on. ..I could finally follow all of the dialogue of the stroke victim (Kirk).

Didn't captivate me as it has others, ...the early romance scenes between Isabelle and Christopher,& a lot of the early dialogue I found SO contrived, and second rate. I did enjoy the later scenes played well by Isabelle and Christopher's characters.
Though overall am astounded people thought so highly of it. ..I kept turning it off, only to try again weeks later as it had such great reviews.

Not one of my favourites on here -though I recognise its smart concept, & merit :)

A beautiful love story in every way. It is a story about two young people who have to find the courage to follow their own hearts desires. It is about a young man who has to look past all his pain and disappointments in order to love himself and reach for what he deserves and it is about a father who sacrificed his relationship with his son for his work, only to find in the end that he was given just one more opportunity to put things right. So happy in the end the son was able to hear his fathers words of endearment and encouragement.i hope when death comes to all of us it brings with it the opportunity for us all to make peace in such a way.

Illusion is the kind of movie I would like to see more of. It is a well scripted, acted and produced presentation. A heart warming production that reveals how important love is. Without love many lives become distorted and lost. The film demonstrated how someone closed off his heart in pursuit of fame and power and in the end had no one but nurses and staff at his dying bedside. It mirrors how so many people think about money above all. Yet, in the end, they cannot take it with them. This film highlights what is truly more valuable and important in life. The character Kirk Douglas portrays learned that. And what a wonderful performance Kirk gave. Even after his stroke, it seems his love of his art healed him and gave him a reason to overcome his stroke. This is a movie about the search for love and the many hills one has to climb to find it. The film also depicts how humans really determine and fashion their own destiny via their choices and the inner voices that drive them on. Our paths are uncertain and our decisions can take us on a path not written, but in this case via this film, a path regained.

I enjoyed it.

Wow. How refreshing to watch a movie that truly entertains and enriches. One can appreciate at many levels the quality and depth of this movie. To a guy who has had his challenges with relationships - early and later in life - the scene with the son's inner monologue of his father's scolding voice really hits home. It seems that there was a key decision early in life by Chris that set the direction of his whole life... the lack of self-esteem that ensued from the perceived lack of fatherly love kept him from reaching for the gold. But in the end we saw what both father and son were made of. Love conquers all.

I need to be able to read captions. I have volume high and hearing aids high, but still cannot hear. also, I thought Illusion was also a book

Great film. I can see how it wouldn't sell at the box office, but it was very relatable and moving. I think it conld be condensed a bit, but the story needs space to tell, and I respect that. I don't think I'd watch it again, but I learned everything I needed to know with the first scan. Great job to all.

Wow. I am so grateful he made this final film. What a moving and memorable last hurrah for such a stellar actor.

Totally well written, hard to synchronize but well done. The passion that is represented here over time is something I'm involved in, vur there might have been some disappointments in the intervening years. Still, it's a wonderful story of love conquering all -- father and son, boy and girl. Sometimes I wish real life were more like that.

Wish we _could_ have some do-overs...just in the nic-of-time like that!
Kirk's STILL 'got it'! This was better than some of his old epic stuff; much more meaningful.

Boblight56, posted on February 27, 2016

This movie had the potential to be one of my all-time favorite movies.. It had a mystical/spiritual theme filled with synchronicity ( as Jung terms it), love/passion, and meaning.. What I felt was un-necessary was the level of violence, blood.. While life contains struggles, conflict, and sometimes aggression, this movie spent way to much time on solving conflicts through violence... Even when aggression plays a meaningful part in the films plot, there is no reason to show blood and extreme violence.. It distracts from the deeper meaning of this film, which Is the love between two soul-mates. With the violence as is, I rate this movie a 7.. If the movie would have shown less violence and a more evolved form of conflict resolution , it would have been one of my favorite movies...But Hollywood has not learned how to show conflict being solved non-violently, spiritually.. Yes conflict is a natural part of the human experience, but violence and brutality are not the only solution.. Hollywood needs to recognize that people ( usually men) beating each other up , is NOT entertaining but distracting from the deeper meaning of this film.. Enough said

Like "The Ghosts Of Christmas' Past" from a film featuring an Ebenezer Scrooge, the main male actor is very paternal in a familiar way! I loved this movie - although I missed some important parts - due to a busier than expected schedule at the time at which I attempted to view the movie!
