Insights: Istanbul (2001)
Istanbul, the capital city of Turkey, is the only city in the world that joins two continents, situated at the crossroads between Asia and Europe. Steeped in 10,000 years of colorful history, Istanbul is a true melting pot of styles, cultures and beliefs. Around Istanbul you will find Turkish baths, many water gardens and bazaars. Indulging the senses is an integral part of any journey, and this is especially true for any tourist in Istanbul.
Dotted around the city are many ancient sites dating back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Must-see sites include the Grand Bazaar which was built at the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, the Underground Palace is a veritable petrified forest of over 300 columns, and Galata tower is a great place to meet and drink coffee. No trip to Istanbul would be complete without a traditional boat excursion on the Bosphorus. Flowing between Europe and Asia, its shores are lined with a mixture of past and present, grand splendor and simple beauty.
