John Major Jenkins on Galactic Alignment (December 2012)

Available worldwide

Where were you during this once-in-a-lifetime moment when the sun aligned with the galactic center? Researcher John Major Jenkins, reported from the sacred Mayan sites of the Yucatan on December 21, 2012.

An author and independent researcher, John Major Jenkins is best known for his works that theorize certain astronomical and esoteric connections of the calendar systems used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. His writings are particularly associated with 2012 millenarianism and the development of Mayanism in contemporary and popular culture.

Was hoping to find a more in-depth treatment of Jenkins's explanation of the Galactic Alignment. Instead he talks at length about his experiences in Mexico and the Yucatan, and how he came to his conclusions -- which to my mind, were not quite what the Maya intended.

PS: I, too, have continued to wonder why the Aztec Calendar continues to be used when referring to the Mayan Calendar. They're actually two different calendars used by two different cultures. One would think that if Jenkins knows so much about the Maya, he would know at least that.

Evidence? What evidence? This is interesting fiction, but just that, fiction. Izapa is an important Preclassic site, but it was not Maya. And why does the Aztec calendar appear in a story about the Maya calendar? I guess to this author all precolumbian people's were the same exotic, mysterious other.
