The Lottery of Birth (2013)

Only available in Canada, United States

Do you shape the world or does it shape you? Drawing on leading thinkers from around the world, and with a torrent of mind-expanding ideas and information, The Lottery of Birth will make you think again about what it means to be free.

This documentary explores the relationship between freedom, power and control in Western democracies. It features interviews with some of the world's leading intellectuals, journalists and activists to offer an alternative perspective on today's society and the future we're creating.

We do not choose to exist, or the environment we grow up in. Our starting point in life is one of passive reliance on forces over which we have no control. We see that from birth onwards our minds are a battleground of competing forces: familial, educational, cultural, and professional. The outcome of this battle not only determines who we become, but the society that we create.

I like the fact they spoke to how we are educated and our belief systems. Mainstream media, television, computer games, etc.

Don't think, just do ...consume and pay your taxes, feed the system. Things are not happiness, and theories do not kill people....
Pause from the muddled haste of today's world and from your heart space, educate yourself, walk in other's moccasins...

A Beautiful film! I love the way it was presented from beginning to end and how it encourages everyone to not be afraid to question their old beliefs and to self-evaluate. It all gets back to the importance of finding the True Self within us and stop following what others in society tell us we "should" do. Tune in to that Infinite Self is what we are all striving to learn to do through all of our experiences in life. That is basically why we are here learning how we can fit in with a more constructive and creative pattern that builds a better world.

Do you have access to the rest of the series? I understand there were 4 more documentaries created after this 1st one.

Thank you for the recommendation! Our team will look into the series to see if they might be available.

It is only of late that I have come to understand how differently I think from my family, friends, and the people I've worked with in the past. I didn't stop asking "Why?" when I was five years old. I've always asked why about everything, taking very little at face value. I didn't understand that only a very small percentage of people question the world around them and, more importantly, question their very beliefs. This film was enlightening in so many ways. I went through so many emotions while watching, from anger to awe, but I'm left with sadness.
When I immediately searched for the social media share buttons after watching, I was shocked to see this amazing window on the truth of things had only been shared 16 times! While I can't find a counter for how many views or even of how many have commented on the movie, I have to believe that far more than 16 have seen this and been moved. And yet, only 16 were moved enough to share it with their acquaintenances, friends, and family.
Those of us who watch Gaia TV are supposed to be more aware, awake, and conscious. So why is it that we are not trying to wake up our world? I was able to share in 5 different ways with only the limited social media buttons that Gaia provides. Is it too much to ask everyone to share once?

Maybe people share Gaia in different ways than you think Gaia should or can be shared ...for instance I work with Cancer Patients and people in pain for 37 years in Physical Therapy...I tell them about Gaia movies and programs The Grounding Movie whereby pain and even macular Degeneration can be changed by simple wholistic solutions ....This is just a different way to share Gaia generation is not always as interested in the big media shares that the younger generation utilizes ...but still interested in good information :)

Why is this documentary only available in USA & Canada? We all pay the same subscription?

SuzannaB@Gaia, posted on February 24, 2016

Thank you for writing!
When we license rights to a film we try our hardest to negotiate worldwide availability; sometimes we’re successful, other times we’re not. In this case, only limited rights were available to us with the film distributor. We will certainly update if this changes!

malcolmscottmail, posted on May 3, 2016

Hi Susanna,
Could we get Gaia's opinion as to why these so called rights are only limited to the US and Canada. I'm sure being involved in the negotiations you must have asked this question?

SuzannaB@Gaia, posted on May 3, 2016

Hi Malcolm, as noted above, the available rights are beyond our control. We make every effort to gain worldwide rights for the films we feature, but this is not always possible.

All the best,

Insightful, powerful, poignant and elegant. I hope teachers will show this in their classrooms.

Great movie. We're at the edge now. No more room for existing models to take us where we need to go as a collective. Our ability to transform ourselves and our world very quickly is only limited by our imagination. The time is upon us to truly create the world we wish to see.

Thank you so much for this documentary. It is important to remind us how we are doing and what our next step is. This film is a reminder of our duty as human citizen of this world.
What concerns me is that this documentary and many others like this shown at Gaiam are not available in certain parts of the world as mentioned by jannelleanxx below. I assume it's because of distribution rights, and likewise, there may be foreign ones that are not allowed to be viewed in North America. Bummer. I love to hear others' point of view on all subject. If I want to know something in the news I tend to want to hear as many sides of the story as possible, thus the importance of knowing more than one language.
As for solutions, my experience is that they will be different no matter where we live and they need to be adressed individually.

janelleannx, posted on January 6, 2015

Once again a great movie that is not available to subscribers outside US and Canada.
Why is it that the rest of us miss out on the best of the best?

HeidiV@Gaia, posted on January 7, 2015

@janelleannx - I apologize for any frustration. Unfortunately, sometimes we are not able to obtain the licensing rights to certain films for some countries. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact our Customer Service department.

I am inspired that this film was even made. We had so much hope and promise for change. Once the Vietnam war was over I think we believed in a new world -- the hundredth monkey phenomenon would beat down the 1% or 10% ; and good would prevail. Authenticity & integrity would become the watchwords of our society. Yet here we stand gripped in the denouement of fraud/war/disease expected to stand & challenge those who would keep the status quo and the masses in their place.
I firmly believe that an open; democratic; complete; truthful education that encourages independent thought is the groundwork on which will build a global world of thinking individuals. Perhaps we have to cut back on consumerism, which keeps us in debt without a secure base. It was one thing to uncover the housing debacle, but why was nothing done to compensate those regular people led astray by their banks?
We need another movie with concrete solutions and ways to know when we make a choice that it leads to the light. We need to connect to our youth who may not even realize.................

A thought provoking and kind movie. Finding beauty, being beauty and asking why?

very thought provoking and important information. thank you!

I believe that if we all applied this into our daily lives, not only can we break free but we can do it as peacefully as possible. This is definitely a thought provoking yet simple seeming task that is so easily applied in our lives if we all would just learn to give up that which we desire for the greater good.

Your last two words, "Greater Good" is sold to the public to minimize the effort to question the authority.
I realized one day after hearing a national radio head say its for the "Greater Good" that there no GG just GOOD.
Too many pay the supreme price the GG. Whose GG too?

We must realize we are the creators of reality. We no longer need a system to direct our lives. We are all born with freedom to choose to experience any reality we wish. Now is time to experience and enjoy our freedom starting with our thoughts, emotions and actions. I do...

If we would apply the wisdom of this movie to our own personal life, we can create freedom within and without. Very Beautiful, thank you.

This film is in actuality stating what we have made our lives out of-- Deception and from that-- Enslavement. If someone watching this is not well-versed in the current state of world affairs, this is not so in your face and anyone could gain a great new perspective of life from it. But it's not philosophical however--it's the current state, the Matrix,--the way it really is. The Controllers know these truths, they created them. If every child saw this film--the questions and query they would raise would be the seed planted to change everything for future generations. Show your children this film. Great Movie!
