For many people, it's difficult to talk about when to stop driving. A study by the Swedish Road and Transport Research Institute compared older and younger drivers in order to develop new technologies that will assist older drivers to focus their attention and improve their reaction times. Surgeons in the U.K. have unveiled a new and less invasive type of heart surgery. The new procedure allows doctors to target problem areas in the heart through a small incision in the patient's groin. Keyhole surgery has made it possible to work on parts of the heart that previously required major surgery. In California, mobile phones with GPS capabilities can be used to identify and locate invasive plants. Bee keepers and researchers look for clues into the causes of the decline in honeybees and other pollinators, and search for solutions. In Japan, scientists have developed a brain-machine interface which analyzes slight changes in the brain’s blood flow to detect brain activity. Geothermal engineers in Australia look for clean sources of energy, such as pumping cold water into hot rock deposits under the ground. In Britain, leaders hope efforts to increase the percentage of energy from renewable sources will also lead to increased employment with the development of new green industries.
