Because some islands, such as the Tuamotu, are threatened by rising ocean levels, scientists are watching coral reefs. Aware of the importance of their environment for the survival of their culture and for tourism, Polynesians are worried. They are fighting to preserve their resources, such as pearl production and lagoon fishing.
