Open Minds: Psilocybin Mushroom Explorer with Simon G. Powell (March 2016)

Season 6, Episode 11
Available worldwide

For Simon G. Powell, his most profound connections to the natural world and spiritual realms came with the ingestion of psilocybin mushrooms. It has become his mission to bring forward the spiritual benefits and a scientific understanding of psilocybin in order to change the way government agencies and cultural norms approach natural psychoactive substances. This interview with Regina Meredith was originally webcast March 3, 2016.

Check out Metanoia from Simon G. Powell

After graduating from UCL in 1992, Simon G. Powell suffered an extended bout of 'mushroom fever' brought on by excessive psilocybin use. After this 'mushroom fever' subsided, he was left with a case of chronic biophilia. This curious condition, which turned out to be permanent and quite stimulating, led him to write a number of unorthodox books, including The Psilocybin Solution, Darwin's Unfinished Business and Magic Mushroom Explorer. He also felt compelled to write and direct two radical film documentaries: Manna and Metanoia.

Too many interruptions. Please let the guest expound on his points without interrupting.

Regina, you Rock! Your interviews have provided me with much joy and entertainment; as well as an education. Your interviews are the best thing on. Thanks for your offering. And your outfits are magical, just like you.

Incredible show. I just read Food of the Gods but frankly TK is so focused on proving his theory, which he should of been and I respect him hugely for, that all of the historical data was lost on a creative, right brained chick like me. I relate and resonate with the information a lot just the same. Thank you for sharing all of this. I plan on not only getting involved myself but continue to introduce my son studying psychology and science to consider these ideas and to be a new blast of light and energy towards this wonderful information. Everything said here resonates so deeply with me thanks for sharing. This takes Divine Spark to a whole new level.

Those mushrooms grow all over the place where I live but I never knew that they could be used in any way. Now I have learned something new.

Agree with the guest. Very good interview. Thanks.

The description of the geometric framework that can be seen sometimes during a mushroom experience sounded very similar to what this woman describes in this LSD experiment from the 1950's. Check it out:

Psilocybin, mescaline, LSD and other hallucinogens have similar chemical structures (indole-amines), thus similar psycho-active properties. They closely resemble the structures of neuro-transmitters and "fit" into the same chemical receptors.

We are immersed in a sea of electromagnetic waves that are all detected by the brain. However the brains job is to focus only on those stimuli that are deemed as essential or important to our existence, survival. The majority of stimuli are ignored so as not to be consciously perceived. What is and is not perceived can change with time as we consciously attribute more or less meaning to these particular stimuli.

The hallucinogenic molecules change this process by breaking down the walls of perception and the brain's selection function, allowing the conscious brain to be flooded with all the incoming EM stimuli simultaneously, effecting extra-sensory expansion. Thus one perceives the world not filtered and fragmented by cerebral interpretation but rather as one, whole interconnected timeless existence. And the essence of this state is love or joy of being one with the universe. This has been called god-consciousness.

The reason why these substances are outlawed by many modern societies is due to the fact that these experiences and realizations threaten the paradigm of control and participation that are essential to the existence and dominance of these civilizations. Typically these societies are totalitarian in nature and do not promote free-thinking and self-realization. That's why these drugs are illegal, not because of the harm that they do, but rather the good that they do for the individual. I have always stated that if every human being would experience these drugs just once in their life, then this would be a much more enlightened and loving world.

Thank you Regina and Simon for presenting this important information.

Great commentary - enlightening

Agree totally, have had many many experiences in my youth of this nature and it is transforming. If nothing else you laugh until your face hurts!

I would not trade these experiences for anything, but you want to be in a good state of mind, with people you trust who are also in a good place, and somewhere where you feel safe.

Great Interview Regina, I read others comments that you interrupted Simon but I can't agree with them. What I saw was a first class interviewer doing her job and working with a nervous guest to feel more relaxed. Your interruptions we timely and made for a great discussion. I Found this to be a very informative. interview. :)
