The Reindeer People (2004)

Only available in Canada, United States

Reindeer People is an intimate portrait of a family of Dukha reindeer nomads, following their migration through the forests of Mongolia’s Hovsgol province. The family moves with a herd of about a hundred reindeer through a sacred forest inhabited by the spirits of their ancestors, who communicate to the living through songs.

The oldest Dukha is a divine seer, a 96-year-old shaman, named Tsuyan. She is the link between the healing songs of the forest ancestors, her people and their reindeer. Tsuyan is the centerpiece of an extraordinary adventure that unites people and animals in one of the wildest regions of Mongolia – where people still live and hunt in a forest dominated by supernatural beings. To live in harmony with them, people had to learn to respect nature and animals and to pass down their beliefs, from generation to generation, by invoking the song-lines of their deceased ancestors.

What a testament to the human spirit. The Dukha are charming, lovely unspoiled natural humans. It is a blessing to be able to see how they live, and I'm grateful. Thank you, Gaiam!

I don't know how they came up with a 5 star rating, but unless you want to be witnessing animal killings and the violence human nature, I am not sure why any one would want to watch this useless movie . As if time and time again we haven't seen human species killing when they could easily turn in to agriculture and dancing instead of hunting for survival. The director/producer Sardar is from that part of the world. I can say this without prejudice as my race goes to northern Iran and am familiar with the barbarism of mongolians. We called them "moguls" .They were famous for violence and killing among their own tribes over cows and women whom they saw as their property . I guess nothing has changed over the centuries.
