Open Minds: Rhineland Mystics Part 2: Meister Eckhart with Matthew Fox (September 2015)

Season 5, Episode 45
Available worldwide

Where Hildegard von Bingen brought forward the divine light, Meister Eckhart found divinity within the darkness. Matthew Fox compares and contrasts the teachings of the Rhineland’s two greatest mystics, Meister Eckhart and Hildegard von Bingen. Eckhart was firmly dedicated to promoting his view of compassions which were in direct opposition to the capitalist powers of his day. This enflamed wealthy detractors who pressed for multiple condemnations of his work and radical philosophies. This interview with Regina Meredith was originally webcast September 22, 2015.

Matthew Fox is an internationally acclaimed spiritual theologian, an Episcopal priest, and an activist who was a member of the Dominican Order for 34 years. He works to renew the ancient mystical tradition of Creation Spirituality and to reawaken the West to its own mystical tradition which has included revivifying awareness of Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, Thomas Aquinas and the Cosmic Christ tradition, as well as interacting with contemporary scientists who are also mystics.

ohhh if I could PLUG INTO all that was shared and embody this in such a way.... I have HEARD such powerful messages that YES, screams mySelf and all I want to do is.... zap, I got it, downloaded and being shared from here on out.... ohhh to listen to this again ;) wow.... very powerful talk. I keep saying "powerful" cause that's really EXACTLY the impression I am left with as I take a moment to reflect over this discussion....
again, THANK YOU Matthew Fox for all you have shared in this interview AND How you have brought it forth.... Regina, wonderful! :D Thank You... :), this hour has been ONE that carried all the first part into another part of KEEPING IT GOING STRONG AND VERY AWAKENING in many ways... "delicious" indeed to quote GuyBell1 ;)

I felt enormously privileged to be an audience for these two conversations of Regina's with Matthew Fox. I have tried to collect wisdom from every source I encountered at all stages of my life. But I could read all the books there are & still not have the experience of the excellent energy & verbal give'n'take so evident here. I like to take notes because I remember better when the information travels through my hands; however, I would have had to transcribe both shows in entirety. So instead, I backed up the soundtrack & listened once again when I felt points went by too quickly.

With these shows, I feel I had a front-row seat (with replays) at a superlatively informative seminar of otherworldly thoughts with expansion seeded throughout to pry me loose from the sediment & set me flowing downstream once more. I am trying to rebalance within myself with all I learn - the negativity (which is such a shallow word for the depth of the actions) of the Cabal as manifested by "the Church" with the sublime "overshadowing of the Holy Spirit" on ALL of creation. Shows like this help me find the middle of the road where Compassion travels, saying, "Yes, yes" to all it encounters on both sides.

Thank you to infinity & beyond for these terrific talks. And, as always, for Regina, I love how you put it all together - from your necklace to the crystal on the table - which are both beautiful characters in the conversation!

Please bring Matthew back for more!

Given Mathew's rhetoric about social justice, plus his first-hand experience with the Catholic Chruch, there's really no excuse for his naivete about Pope Francis. I learned a long time ago that just because someone accurately describes the problem doesn't mean they have the right solution. There's a quote attributed to Vladimir Lenin: “The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves.” which gives us a good insight into how the Cabal has become so powerful in today's world. I've been an environmentalists for 40 years, but I see now how that movement has been hijacked and controlled by the Cabal. Furthermore, the Jesuits are a military order with a long history of deceit, murder and secretive control. Francis, the first Jesuit Pope, is following the Obama script: tell the truth about what's wrong with the country in order to gain trust, then use that trust to lead people deeper into bondage. You can tell this is true because Francis is calling for a world government to save us from the environmental destruction that the Cabal themselves have created. They create the problem, whip up the public reaction, and then offer their solution: World Government.

Marshall Rosenberg has taught empathy as a a formula that seems to work to develop compassion. I used to think of compassion as emotion. I do not have emotion in the same way many people describe it. But empathy can be learned. Observation, Feeling, Need, Request. I have no connection with Rosenberg or his teachings now, his site is cnvc, he died a few months ago this year, in February 2015. The OFNR seems to work, however.

Ask: What do I see/touch/hear/smell/taste? What emotion do I feel (attitude about sensory input) What need of mine is not being met? What is my reasonable request of my brother or sister?

This breaks it down so that I at least was able to put myself in stranger's shoes regardless of how strange the stranger might be. All sentient beings in physical vessels begin perceptual experiences with sensory input. Emotion is a "gut" interpretation of sensory data, like the teakettle whistles when the water vapor pressure reaches a certain point. The need is the translation of gut reaction into action, the repair, the "fix," as perceived. Then there is the expression. The practice groups focus on REASONABLE expression. Rosenberg also taught his students not to act unless one could act from the heart. That is, we may have may reasons for our actions. We may act out of ego, to get even, to teach someone a lesson. We may act out of duty, because it is socially expected. We may act because we are being paid to act, again, an exterior motive. But when we act out of love, from the depth of our soul, then those actions, I believe are blessed, not because I have a hotline to God, I do not. But because heart/love is the source of all creation. From that place we create an echo to the very beginning of all creation that says, this is why i open my eyes and breathe every day, for this I live. For this love. And it remembers this love this creative, selfless inclusive love like the sailor remembers a siren's sweet, so fragile, so rare...he cannot erase it and he sails every day on the dark cold sea in hopes of again hearing the rhyme of the ancient mariner.

What an evening of learning and entertainment! Following the first interview about Hildegard von Bingen with this tremendous conversation was such a treat. I so greatly appreciate Mr. Fox's knowledge and his eloquent way of sharing, and Regina's skill as an interviewer and host was the perfect compliment. I hope to see him return to Open Minds in the near future.

What a wonderful human being. The two part interview was so interesting and I feel he has been very brave living and sharing his life work the way he has. Years ago I took a workshop with him when 'Creation Spirituality' first came out, it's one I'll never forget.
Thank you Regina and Matthew for this interesting discussion.

Thank you Regina so much for doing these really fascinating interviews with Dr. Fox, who is not only very intelligent, passionate, and a good story-teller, but I really enjoyed his compassionate and open-hearted/minded nature as well. The energy dance between the two of you in delving into these topics was top-notch, and fun to watch.

This interview and the one that came before it were just wonderful!! I cannot tell you how much I needed to hear what Matthew Fox had to say about Hildegard von Bingen (previous episode) and Meister Eckhart. I was raised in the Christian church and have struggled in the past few years with that connection. I don't feel nearly so alone now. Thank you GAIAM TV and Regina Meredith!!

Please have Matthew Fox back to speak of Creation Spirituality. Although he has written many books, his book Original Blessing is his masterpiece! His book Creation Spirituality was a distilled summary for the world. It is wrong to interpret Creation as "Nature." It is a spirituality that is centered in the creative process of reality; its ever flowing energy and envelopment of all that is; seen and unseen. God as Creator and we as co-creators. All that is, is Creation and swept up and along in the process of Creation.

When he passes, so does much wisdom. Thank you for documenting some of his brilliance. Please do more.
