Smile (2005)

Available worldwide

Two girls born on different sides of the world, who have led very different lives from one another, find their paths converging in China. While Katie’s life was blessed with wealth and good fortune, Lin’s life was filled with heartache and suffering. Lin had been born with severe facial defects and was abandoned by her parents as an infant. She was taken in by Daniel who raised her like she was his own.

Katie decides to travel to China with the Doctor’s Gift Organization, and discovers Lin. The Doctor’s Gift organization offers to perform plastic surgery on Lin’s face to correct the defects. Lin has been disappointed in the past and is not sure that she wants to run the risk of disappointment again. This beautiful and moving story is based on real experiences from a volunteer with Doctor’s Gift Organization.

I do not agree with former feedback! To me, this film was very heatwarming. It is of course no consumermovie, as mainstream wants dramatic action, instead of movies for the soul.
It showed, how total different lifes can be in different places and showed how a rich teenagergirl became a woman. Not n sexual ways but in growing into a woman that cares and has responibility. To me it really could be a true story, eventhough the chinese girl would look not exact soo preatty, even after operation. But tht is just a minor detail!
Also as I retrospect my own teenyears, the film shows that many kids with 17years of age, are often understated and humanitywise much more grown up then the so called grownups give them credit for! And sadly very often demoralize tis joung beings.
Too sad, that many of them have not the good parents or teachers to lead them the way, give them chances.
Yet it truely shows, how it could be and that good rolemodels are very important!!! Also the man who took that disfiguered baby and cared for it, shows to what acts of kindness people are capable of. To follow ones heart, do, what seems to be the right kind to do, to care more than just for oneselve..A hero in my eyes. A film that truely has great value, in regard how life can be turend around when people truely care.
Birgit missses the point of story by mocking about minor details and seems to have no idea about chinese culture, sometimes less noise is much more effectful. I wish there were more flms like this one for mainstream minds available!!!
Very well done!

The acting was pretty terrible, the story line was unresolved, the editing was poor in places, it really wasn't a strong film. It wouldn't have taken much to make it better, a stronger hand in the directing for starters. In the scene where the father and daughter made their way to the train station towards the hospital the way the Chinese girl walked was completely unbelievable. She had a cleft lip, not a cleft brain! It was patronizing to depict a girl with a facial disfigurement in such a manner.

So many unnecessary weirdly directed, clumsy acting moments. The Ted character was half in the story and half out and as the film ended it was left completely unresolved. Some of the better acting was from the girl's father but goodness the overall character development was pretty poor and basic.

I am sorry to be such a 'party pooper', but having compassion does not meant that one suspends one's critical mind, and this film; like many that are available on Gaiam; was somewhat disappointing. I have been a subscriber for quite a while and out of 10 films perhaps 2 are really good films. Having a good subject alone just isn't enough.

I am so frustrated and angry the films stop and sometimes start up again and sometimes not at all.
We are just into a film and it stops.
This is ridiculous!!!!!

I am enjoying the movie, but sometimes the screen freezes and the movie even just stopped suddenly and I had problems reloading. I have been experiencing this problem lately with other programs. It never used to be a problem, but now it is happening often.

Thank you for looking into this.

elainebennett, posted on February 25, 2015

I experienced that problem, too, but not just on this film, but a few others today.

What a very lovely touching story. From the final pics at the end I assume this was based on a true story. Hats off to the girls, love of the father, and the doctors and nurses that do all the surgeries. Grand film

That's just what this great film will make you do - smile. How love and compassion, mixed with a lot of courage and a little bit of plastic and oral surgery, can literally transform so many lives is the message this brings. Great cast and story!
