Every time Chris Grosso believed he had fallen about as far as he could fall, the bottom dropped out from under him and his life crashed lower. His role in the indie music scene gave him too much contact with the drug and alcohol addictions that were destroying his life. Finally, as he reveals in this powerful interview, originally webcast on April 20, 2016, he connected with spirituality and found an inner serenity that allowed him to find a path away from substance abuse. Now, he helps others.

Chris Grosso is a public speaker, writer, recovering addict, spiritual director, and author of Indie Spiritualist: A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality and Everything Mind: What I've Learned About Hard Knocks, Spiritual Awakening and the Mind-Blowing Truth of it All. He writes for ORIGIN Magazine, Huffington Post, and Mantra Yoga + Health Magazine, and has spoken and performed at Wanderlust Festival, Yoga Journal Conference, Sedona World Wisdom Days, Kripalu, and more. A self-taught musician, Chris has been writing, recording, and touring since the mid-90s. He is passionate about his work with people who are in the process of healing or struggling with addictions of all kinds. He speaks and leads groups in detoxes, yoga studios, rehabs, youth centers, 12-step meetings, hospitals, conferences, and festivals worldwide. He is a member of the advisory board for Drugs over Dinner.

Authentic and honest with a simple message. I think he's a wonderful messenger for anyone ready to hear, but especially so for younger people.

This guy totally rocks! Best explanation of the "I AM" that I've heard so far with this series. Re Chris' morning intention -- I think aligning one's will with God's and reminding oneself of that intention each morning is a great way to start the day!

But to harp on the whole idea of "Not my will but thine" perspective ... I think of it more in terms of a joint effort rather than a superior/inferior relationship [with the Divine]. Unless one is going to go into a philosophical semantics discussion about the difference between I and me . . . one needs to be careful not to negate the I AM part of the equation. From my perspective we really just need to get out of our own way.

"Civilized" culture has programmed us to stomp on our true selves. It is a painful process, often started by those who we love most and love us the most. "Not now, later . . . You don't want to do that, here do this." etc . . . . H/she's a _____ child. . . . . I think you are best suited for . . . " The whole a newborn human is just a "blank slate" kinda mentality that many of us have been raised with . . . Our EGOs, imo, have a good reason to feel abused and our own inability to find our way out of the dilemna forces the ID to go crazy and/or the body to become sick, or (most often) both. I like Chris' emphasis on a pro-active solution to the dilemna. Even though it still amazes me, isn't it a wonder how sometimes the most simple solutions: I AM/be yourself (not someone else's idea of you) can be the most effective.
