Sugar! What’s not to like? But what if you were told sugar is the big contributor of a worldwide explosion in obesity, diabetes, and something called "metabolic syndrome"? What if you discovered sugar is addictive? And what if you discovered that the sweet stuff is added to way more food products than you ever imagined?

Nigel Latta embarks on a journey to discover if sugar could be the real culprit in this crisis. He take on world-leading international scientists and the food industry, and he radically changes his diet in an attempt to understand the truth about sugar – and also to try not to die sooner than he has to.

Never mind sugar. Metabolic syndrome in the house and it led to complications of a sort. Have to do my own cooking as much as possible.
Does New Zealand have a grain lobby like the U.S. does?

If one is nowhere near prediabetic or diabetic, and controls calorie intake, one could get away with NON-cardio exercise like practically all forms of yoga; and, yes, that does include power yoga and most forms of vinyasa yoga ... if they low carb!

Still, in retrospect, this is a start. Still I give this 5 stars! Because it's a start. Don't demonize sugar ... use substitutes you like - honey, agave, raw brown sugar that form pure glucose in the blood much slower ... type 2 diabetics know this!

why are we still spending money on health care to support these bad choices?

I am all of three minutes into this and its already as accurate as 2+2=4. My aunt used to tout this same thing and we all thought she was kookie. She was so right and the irony is that she passed away from kidney disease due to long term diabetes denial. But everything she said is being mentioned.

This is a super documentary, and tells the story that needs to be told. I went sugar/ carb free cold turkey. It took 2 weeks that were hard to live through. I wanted to eat my fingernails. Someone told me nuts were safe and that was extraordinarily helpful. At the 2 week mark, the cravings stopped. They just disappeared. In about 1 month, I lost 14 lbs. All my lab results are better. It can be done!

This was a great documentary - one that will definitely have a lasting effect on what and how I eat! Thanks!

As a mother, I watched this and learned that I need to make changes in how I shop and the foods that I prepare for my family. Just like the host, I thought I was making good choices because we don't drink sodas or eat out at restaurants often. BUT my triglycerides are alarming my doctor and bizarrely she didn't mention sugar to me as a factor. Now I'm looking at further eradicating sugar from our household and seeking out healthful alternatives. I also had my 12 and 13-year-old daughters (who just went Trick or Treating last night) watch this movie. They told me they never quite understood why I was such a nag about brushing and flossing. The dental section of this documentary was something that spoke to them and will have a memorable effect.
Thank you Gaiam. You continue to inform me in a way that improves the lives of my family.

It is harder than I ever imagine to cut out sugar. There is cinnamon sugar, chocolate, even tomato sauce. People roll their eyes when I say I am addicted to sugar as if it is crazy.
