The Trouble With Atheism (2006)

Only available in Canada, United States

As our modern world grows more focused on technology and scientific development, more people are adhering to rational explanations, based on logic and reason, for the way our world works. Rod Liddle feels this focus is leading people to atheism, causing them to abandon long traditions of faith.

Liddle takes on the scientific method, trying to punch holes in theories that have no conclusive answers. Throughout the program, Liddle compares scientists, their methodologies and research facilities, to priests, dogma and temples.

This program, though sympathetic to the religious view, does try to provide a balanced approach to science vs. religion. It asks those leaning towards science to be open to the possibility of a god.

I rather enjoyed the rigor with which Rod Liddle pursued some of the tenets of the atheist position. It is one thing to say what you are against (atheism), it is quite another to state what your are for and how your position can help to change the world for the better. He exposed for me the bankruptness of atheism--what are your moral values that guide your life? For me it comes down to a life well lived--what does it include and how does it serve to transform the dysfunctional societies we have created. For my money the mystical traditions of the main religious traditions offer the best prospects for the future of humankind--live compassionately, serve one another in love, die to the ego self and live from the authentic self, all of us are connected and are part of a unified field of consciousness--all things I hear the mystics telling me. Finally, the diagnosis of world offered by Richard Rohr that we need to transcend the dualistic mind and its way of perceiving reality and move towards the contemplative state of being and doing is something that makes good sense to me. This is religion at its highest level and it creates unity not divisiveness which I believe lower level religious consciousness and atheism spawn. Sean Kelly (High School Religion Teacher)

An interesting documentary about religion and religious views vs those of atheists. I think this gets to the heart of the concept of the human ego. It doesn't necessarily matter what your beliefs or dis-beliefs are, it's to the extent that you think you're right and others are wrong.
