Sea Legends: The Wings of the Fishermen
The island of Santa Catalina, in the south of the Solomon archipelago, is located 2,000 kilometers northeast of Australia. Legend has it, the spirits taught an ancestor, named Fica Fica, the secret to catching the elusive needle fish. He learned to fashion wings that would fly like a bird so that he could fish just as the birds did.
This legend lives on today with Wapo, the traditional chief of the Aikawa people. The time has come for him to pass on this knowledge to his 11-year-old nephew. We follow along as they gather the materials needed for making the traditional kite and eventually take to the seas and fish like the birds.
