The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom (2010)

Only available in Canada, United States

It’s 1976 and Elizabeth is just your average suburban 11-year-old praying for adolescence to arrive when she discovers her whole life has been a lie. With only her imagination to guide her, Elizabeth runs away in search of her true identity. Her adoptive mother Marion is then forced to break out of the carefully constructed “truth” she’s been clinging to and go after her daughter.

This leads to a cathartic cross-country trek by a mother searching for a daughter who’s searching for a mother – both of them really searching for themselves. The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom is a poignant, sometimes funny, very female, coming of age story that explores the tension between creating identity and finding it within.

Sweet movie. My favorite part was the mother softening her tight grip of control...over everything in her life. Miraculous when you can let go like that.

This is a wonderful movie. I found out that I was adopted at the same age as the character, Elizabeth. I went through a lot of the same feelings as she did. This movie really resonated with me in a big way! I have found myself wondering who my mom and dad are too. Thinking, hmmm, I wonder if they are celebrities, a doctor or nurse, a shaman or whatever! But, today, I know who I am within and that I am always connected to Source/God and there is no need to ever feel alone ever again <3 Namaste!

What a beautifully written and acted movie. Dolly's music and the story line added such a beautiful message of how love triumphs all challenges, even mother/daughter ones. Thank you for this incredibly spiritual cinema. It really touched me especially the Native American symbols, sparrow and actors.
