The Pursuit to Unearth the Secrets of the Nazca Mummies
In the spring of 2017, Gaia filmmakers joined researchers outside Nazca, Peru to investigate several anomalous, mummified bodies. Our initially published footage of the mummies spurred controversy online and within the scientific community, encouraging a deeper investigation. Now, after seeking a multitude of independent scientists and universities to analyze these bodies, we’ve come to believe they are unlike anything ever cataloged in the fossil records.
Uncover The Journey That Lead to Our Latest Findings
The Varied Bodies of Evidence
Maria was the first mummy filmed and analyzed, as her fully intact and noticeably peculiar remains piqued our interest. Her elongated skull and three protracted phalanges on each hand and foot fascinated researchers. Bone samples from disparate appendages proved consistent and carbon dating placed her between 245 – 410 AD.
Josephina + Alberto
Ostensibly this mummified duo is of an entirely different species than Maria, as seen by their stature and bone structure. The presence of eggs inside Josephina and a bizarrely embedded metal plate in her chest added to the mystery. The pair’s atypical jaw structure meant they would have been incapable of chewing.
The Family (Male, Female, Child)
This trio was nicknamed “The Family” as they appear to be two adults and one adolescent. Their remarkably well-preserved skin appears similar to a reptile’s and CT scans revealed The Family’s bone density consistent to that of a living being. Their skulls appear similar in shape to human cranial cavities, but with notable differences.
