When Dick Steppler purchased an old sewing machine from a Winnipeg flea market, he found, tucked away in a bottom drawer, a tiny autograph book belonging to a World War One nurse named Irene Layman.

Filled with the poems, drawings and signatures of injured Canadian soldiers, one entry always intrigued Dick, a mysterious message written to Irene in a native language. Dick enlisted Ancestors in the Attic to uncover the story of the native soldier and the nurse and track down their descendents so he could present them with a copy of the autograph book.
