Back to the Garden

1 hr, 10 mins

Where have all the flower children gone? In 1988, filmmaker Kevin Tomlinson asked that question as he interviewed a group of hippies – living and raising families off-grid in rural Washington State and insulated from mainstream culture.

Nearly 20 years later he tracked down his subjects again to find out what had become of their dreams of environmental utopia and sixties idealism.

The film captures a time-lapse view of these back-to-the-landers told with moving personal stories of dedicated tribal families with lots of freedom but little cash, unflinching grass-roots activism in small conservative communities and of hippie kids who today ask whether “free love” was really free.
