In order to protect their lagoons, New Caledonia, has set up AMP, or Protected Marine Areas. However these regulations have given rise to new conflicts between fishers and the native tribes. Solving these territorial conflicts, in a way that satisfies everyone, is essential for defining the rules for protecting the environment. Taking traditions and customs into account is also a priority for a number of NGOs and associations.
The coral is beginning to grow back and some endangered species are starting to multiply again. The campaigns for ongoing protection and management must be maintained if this coral ecosystem is to be handed on intact to future generations despite the local conflicts.
