When Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb, it’s a sure bet that very few people, if anybody, foresaw its consequences – the lighting up of the planet, like a star. Yet, images of the earth taken from orbit during nighttime illustrate clearly the energy we waste by letting light dissipate into space. From the advent of fire to man’s control of the atomic building blocks of life, humans have diligently endeavored to control nature, control progress, and control the energy ensconced in the earth.
