China’s insatiable demand for energy is hurting the environment. According to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, it’s already overtaken the United States as the world’s biggest producer of carbon dioxide. But in the remote Chinese province of West Guangxi, simple technology is now allowing millions of poor families to cook and keep warm using carbon-neutral bio-gas, produced from human and animal waste. It’s saving millions of tons of firewood and coal every year.
