Lease of Life follows a scheme aimed at improving the lives of the landless poor in Nepal’s rural areas, while at the same time helping cut down carbon dioxide emissions. Under the scheme, Nepal’s poorest families are provided with 40-year leases on barren hillside land that they can cultivate. Here they plant trees as their investment for future income – and the trees help tackle climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. The scheme has given Laxmi, a poor landless farmer, a new lease of life.
