Nestled at the mouth of the Amazon River on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, Marajo is the world’s largest fluvial (river) island.

Marajo is also called The Ocean Shield because it forms a barrier that protects the river from the unpredictable sea.

The island in the midst of the fabled river is home to Brazil’s largest buffalo herds, which are perfectly adapted to the environment.
