Dr. John MacCallum interviews Therese Schroeder-Sheker, founder of the School of Music Thanatology at St Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, Montana. A contemplative practice with clinical applications, music thanatology involves palliative care for terminal patients who are in physical or spiritual pain. It brings together spirituality, music and medicine in a comprehensive and practical way. Often, Therese finds, terminal patients who are in great pain are not free to do any of the spiritual work that can help them confront their death. If the music can ease the pain, then the patient can become free to begin that inner work.
