Wind turbines in the Apennine Mountains may help to cut down on carbon emissions in Italy, but not everyone is happy to see them. Palm oil is increasingly in demand for both packaged foods and biodiesel, but its popularity comes at a price, as enormous tracts of forest are cleared for palm plantations, destroying the last habitat of orangutans and other animals. To deal with the massive amounts of waste from its population of 9 million, Mexico City takes action on composting and recycling. Celebrities such as Brad Pitt take a leading role in calling attention to the need for eco-friendly design in housing. Green furniture, made with renewable, non-toxic materials, is another area of design finding greater acceptance among consumers wishing to support environmental causes. With coal-fired power plants playing a major – and growing – role in generating greenhouse gases, researchers race to find ways to prevent the gases from being released into the atmosphere, and to store them underground.
