The UN estimates half the world’s fisheries are overfished. The activity of unlicensed trawlers adds to the crisis. In Part 1, we began our report on the damage caused by illegal fishing fleets – damage to both the local fishing economies of the West African nations and the sustainability of the fisheries. Illegal trawlers typically don’t respect breeding grounds, pay no license fees, and ignore fishing quotas.
