Stolen Fish – Part 2

Earth Report
S14:Ep222 mins2009

The UN estimates half the world’s fisheries are overfished. The activity of unlicensed trawlers adds to the crisis. In Part 1, we began our report on the damage caused by illegal fishing fleets – damage to both the local fishing economies of the West African nations and the sustainability of the fisheries. Illegal trawlers typically don’t respect breeding grounds, pay no license fees, and ignore fishing quotas. Earth Reports examines claims that millions of dollars worth of illegally caught fish are smuggled into Europe. In Part 2, we look at how the pirates smuggle fish into Europe, taking advantage of chaotic regulatory laws and organizations.
