A Stone-Age Kalashnikov – Part 1: Blood and Beauty

Beyond the Passage of Time
S1:Ep826 mins2009

Tourists are seldom seen in the region of the Surma (also known as Suri), near the border of Ethiopia and Sudan, as no one can ensure their safety and security. In order to catch their tribesmen’s eye, both men and women carve geometric patterns in their skin with razors and acacia thorns. The Surma women have a weird idea of beauty: they follow the ancient tradition of cutting the bottom lip and inserting a clay plate, gradually increasing the plate’s diameter and stretching the skin. The bigger the plate, the more cows the bride’s family will receive as a bride price.
