Curitiba is Brazil’s fifth largest economic centre and is embarking on an extensive urban planning project combining both social and environmental policies. By including plans for the modernization of its social and administrative services, and developing waste sorting, Curitiba has become a model and worldwide reference in sustainable development.
Major changes include an improved public transportation system that is accessible to the public at all economic levels. A new program for helping the poor is a waste sorting and recycling program where recyclables are exchanged for food is being implemented to the benefit of the community. Laws are also being changed to allow developers to build higher buildings as long as they protect environmentally sensitive areas.
