A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism (2010)

Only available in United States

Narrated by Oscar winner Kate Winslet and directed by Oscar nominee Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, this inspiring film follows one woman’s quest to unlock her autistic son’s mind. Margret, whose ten-year-old son Keli is severely autistic, has tried a number of treatments to help her son.

Consumed by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge about this mysterious and complex condition, she travels from her home in Iceland to the United States and Europe, meeting with top autism experts and advocates. She also connects with several other families touched by autism, whose struggles echo her own: the endless doctor visits and experiments with different treatments, the complication of doing everyday tasks, and the inability to communicate – perhaps the most painful and frustrating aspect of autism.

But as she comes across innovative new therapies with the potential to break down the walls of autism, Margret finds hope that her son may be able to express himself on a level she never thought possible.

It is important to understand in between lines and when the expert talking in minute 31:31 mentions "the neurological damage that we call autism..." I do support that comment 100% since I do believe that it is neurological damage caused to this kids by an environmental factor and autism is the name they gave to it, but it is really that, a damage, an injury..........

I don't know what causes autism, I just know that my daughter was born totally normal, she was a beautiful healthy baby girl who started talking when she was 9 months old, she was always alert and happy, followed instructions very good and developed great until she turned 1, then she received the MMR and Varicella vaccine one day and stopped looking at us, stopped talking and was never the same any more, she lost all the language she had at that point and started having repetitive behaviors and gastrointestinal symptoms that put her and us into a constant nightmare.......Our son was not vaccinated and he is a typical boy with a high IQ. Maybe a coincidence...I don't know, we might see it different, but it is a fact.
Yes, autistic kids need understanding, but they also need help and biomedical intervention along with therapies, that is the way we can help them. Our daughter has gone from a regressive autism that left her with a severe low functioning condition to a high functioning mild autism that allows her at least go to school, learn basic math, read and even when her language is still very limited, she can communicate her needs, ask questions and go with us everywhere without people noticing her condition a lot of times, they need our understanding and our help.
God help us and our kids in this journey....

I've posted the title of this documentary on my FB page to try & spread the word. There's so much now that can be done to open up communication for these children yet many young parents are not aware of where to get help. When children can communicate, a whole new world opens to them. Their abilities can be recognized by themselves and others. If you know someone who falls on the Autism Spectrum or simply want to have more understanding and compassion, please watch this. As people become more aware, they will begin treating these children and adults as human beings with knowledge and skills to share instead of objects to deride, scorn, pity, or institutionalize. One of the very best documentaries I've ever seen.

Autism is not a disease that needs to be cured. It is different way that the brain is processing information. We need to help them function and bring awareness to the community to bring acceptance instead of putting them through rigorous treatments. We need to love them for who they are and the HALO program is a great step in the right direction.

God bless the Indian woman at HALO program!!
I'm convinced diet is part of the picture. The gut out of order affects the brain immensely. These children need a gluten free diet full of cultured foods. Gluten affects the brain--its even been connected to schizophrenia. Diet must be part of the picture of healing! Donna Gates food program heals the gut and has success with autism. Gluten, sugar and dairy can cause a leaky gut and this affects the brain. nutrition is powerful medicine!
