In Mexico with Andrea Marcum: From Your Head to Your Heart

This vinyasa practice with Andrea Marcum is like an intuitive blind date with yourself—one that connects you to the originality, resourcefulness and vision of your heart. Physically she takes you through bending in ways that take you to the heart-opening peak pose Nataragasana (King Dancer), but you will also discover a more universal understanding of flexibility and alignment along the way.

“Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken.” Albert Camus

On Andrea's path she has found that personal transformation means trading intellect for intuition sometimes-- shifting from your head to your heart. To truly invite change into your heart and not just into your mind you have to be willing to move away from over-thinking and towards that which is imaginative and visceral -- away from feeling stuck at logic and towards the boundless and seemingly irrational concepts of faith and love.

Props: 2 blocks, strap, bolster

Featuring music by Preston Pierce.

Hi Andrea,

I took a break from yoga for a while, and am just getting back. I have really missed your practices. LOVE this one. Thanks so much!

Hi Andrea,
I have never met you personally although I was in Los Angeles last summer and wanted to come take one of your classes in West Hollywood but could not make it unfortunately. I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years until 2011, I am originally from Italy and that's where I live now. I found you on the Gaiam TV network but I wish I could have found you when I lived there so I could have taken your classes live. I think you are an amazing teacher, so strong, I love your soft beautiful voice, you have helped me to get so strong I can now do many arm balances and inversions thanks to your core routines!! Again, you are amazing and I hope I get to meet you next time I am in LA. Keep posting videos so that I can follow you from here.

Thank you so very much for this wonderful message! Sorry to have missed you in LA, but thrilled to hear that we are practicing together anyway! I'll be in Italy leading a retreat in September. Very excited to come to your country with my wonderful group of yogis. I promise to keep the Gaia videos coming and thank you from the bottom of my heart for practicing with me here. xx A

A nice and smooth practice with some lovely twists and bends. I like the flow from some of the postures into others. Scenery is soothing to the eyes and enjoy your lovely voice as well.
Thank you.

Another beautiful practice, Andrea. You really never disappoint. This was so soothing and gentle, yet definitely challenging and powerful. Your core work is always intense, especially after doing one of your practices last night as well. Thank you once again. I feel wonderful. Heart open and filled.

So happy to hear you are Heart open and filled. Back to back practices!? You're my hero :) xx A

I really liked this practice. I think that whoever is rating the difficulty level simply watches the practice without doing it. It looks deceptively easy if you don't take the holding time into account. I find the core sections in most practices rather easy, but not with you Andrea! You do not let us down! You have a knack for making a direct hit to the core weakness, and I find myself thinking, "Oh no! I'm not going to be able to do this! Let it end already!" To the Gaia technical crew: Beautiful scenery, though it looks like they had more cameras than cameramen, as Andrea's head was consistently cut off from one of the cameras when she stood up. One would think that if a cameraman was behind the camera, that he would have had the sense to pull back. The lighting was also a bit of a joke. Sometimes the sun was blinding on that center camera, and as the sun moved and it got darker, what ever light they were shining was a joke: It looked kind of like a flashlight going on and off. But is was a great class and I liked the soothing music. Thanks so much Andrea! Hope to see more classes like this again!

Stunned to hear that there was even an instant when you thought "Oh no! I'm not going to be able to do this! Let it end already!" LOL... you are, as I've said before hard core :). xx A

I have those thoughts during many of your core sequences!

Thank you, you are now one of my new teachers, I felt like I was in a great tough strong class, looking at your coblestones, I was on a little wobbly carpet. Hardest was the core work after the first navasana. I will look for more from you!

andreamarcum, posted on March 6, 2016

Totally appreciate your carpet cobblestones :) and yes, that core work was a bit of a beast if I do say so myself... Look forward to hearing from you again soon1 xx A

Thanks, it is so great that you are actually writing us, means a lot in this VR world, it is so odd that we also really get so much from these videos, it, we all feel close somehow...

andreamarcum, posted on March 7, 2016

You have totally made my day! We do feel close - and I've actually had two Gaia students come and meet me on retreat as proof of just how close we are. Jan from Arkansas came to Mexico and met me for the first time there - the same place in Mexico where my In Mexico With Andrea Marcum series is shot -- and Ann from Belgium met me for the first time in India on retreat. You couldn't be more bang on when you say that Gaia brings us all close no matter how far <3 xx A

Really enjoyed this challenging practise this morning. Some very interesting parts for me to make me realise how out of practise I am, but love your classes so much I didn't want to stop. Feeling light for the start of the day:)

So glad you are filled up with light! Thanks so very much for practicing with me! xx A

Thanks Andrea! This was definitely a challenge. This was the first video I wanted since joining Gaia tv and didn't know what I was getting myself into. You worked me out Yogini style and with a smile on your face. I look forward to many more workouts on GAIA tv and with you. :).

You really had me laughing with that "u" core work comment.

Hard, as usual, but I think you could make lying down feel challenging. :-)
Exhilarating.
I was very grateful for the last few restorative poses. At almost 63 I definitely needed them!

Thanks for sharing yourself with all of us. You are a deep, beautiful, unique soul.
Namaste.

Andrea,
I always enjoy your practices and it was a pleasure to experiment with a new one. I am a physician and your statement about sometimes needing to submit our intellect to our intuition resonated deeply within me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and physical asanas. You merge everything together into a healing practices for me.

Jennifer, I am so moved by this message. Healing modalities are so personal and universal all at once, and your insight as a physician is deeply appreciated. Thank you for filling my heart and for practicing with me here on Gaia! xx A
