What Is Real? The Story of Jivamukti Yoga

Emerging from the counter-culture cafe scene of 1980s New York City, Jivamukti Yoga harnessed the creative hustle and bustle of the city into a spiritual revolution that would eventually lasso the globe. What Is Real? The Story of Jivamukti Yoga follows the path of the visionary Jivamukti yoga teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life, who together propelled the brand and practice of Jivamukti Yoga to a global stage.

As we trail the history of the Jivamukti Yoga method from its rough NYC roots to its international adoption, we accompany diverse individuals who practice Jivamukti on their journeys to liberate their bodies, minds, and souls from material illusion. We follow the film’s South African filmmaker, director, and narrator, Jay Mac, in his practice of Jivamukti Yoga to transcend personal tragedy and liberate from material conditioning. The movie also includes narratives and interviews from famous figures and yoga practitioners such as Sting, Krishna Das, Russell Simmons, Donna Karan, MC Yogi, and more. While their personal histories may differ, Jivamukti yogis unite in their pursuit of the question: what is real?
