This Is Your Life: Be In It

I walked out of the grocery store last night, walked down the street and as I walked through my front door, I realized that I didn’t even register who rang my groceries through. I tried really hard to recall the person, the face - but couldn’t. It was a woman, that’s all I could come up with. Height? Not sure. Hair colour? No idea. What was she wearing? Not a clue.

Talk about walking around in a dreamworld. So today I’m making up for it big time. I’m looking everyone in the eye, I’m holding doors open for people I don’t know, I’m smiling and nodding at people I pass, and basically just participating in the life that is going on around me.

It’s so easy to become absorbed by our thoughts, our phones and the little bubble we find ourselves in. Get out there and actively participate in your life and the life that’s happening around you. Give a basket to the lady who’s struggling with too many items in her hands at the grocery store. Listen for the answer when you ask someone how they are. Make eye contact with the lady in the elevator and as you get off on your floor and offer an authentic “Enjoy the rest of your day!”

Because there is so much going on all around us – people are living their lives right in front of us. They are having amazing days and horrible days, great news and shocking news, relaxed moods and frustrated moods.

We are surrounded by a world that has stuff happening all the time. It’s not always good, nor is it always bad – but it is real. And by throwing your love and good vibes into the mix, you only make things better. At the very least, you’ll make someone smile or feel good about themselves. And that’s really cool. And meaningful.

This is your real life, be in it!

I am astonished by how much looking everyone in the eye that I meet and interact with transforms the day. It is such a simple but powerful shift.
