Holistic nutritionist Patty Gomez shares 5 ways we can tame our tummies

Holistic nutrition uses a whole foods diet as the cornerstone to bring balance to all aspects of the human body and life. By replacing processed and lower-nutritional foods with whole foods, one can achieve the balance to live a healthy, happy and disease-free life. The idea being that man is more than the sum of its parts; no two people are the same, so therefore, they should not be treated as such.

How your digestion affects your whole body

All health starts in the gut! Our digestive tract contains most of our immune system and 90% of our serotonin (the feel good chemical). These are just some of the many reasons why maintaining a healthy digestive tract is so important for the health of our entire body. Here are five tips to help keep your body – and your digestion – running smoothly:

Chew your food

Digestion starts in the mouth. The act of chewing not only breaks down our food into smaller particles to swallow, but it secretes saliva, coating the food with enzymes that begin to digest fats and starches right in your mouth.

Eat your meals stress-free

The state of mind that you are in when eating will affect your digestion. Eat meals at the table with loved ones. Turn off the TV. Put away your phone.

Decrease drinks at meal time

Drinking too much with meals will decrease the amount of stomach acid which is needed for proper breakdown of food and nutrients. In fact, drinking too much during a meal will actually shut down the digestive process. Take small sips of water at room temperature if thirsty.

Aid your digestion

  • Eating smaller meals more often as opposed to larger meals three times a day
  • Decreasing your intake of alcohol and red meat
  • Decreasing or eliminating your intake of stimulants, such as coffee and cigarettes
  • Squeezing lemon into your glass of water
  • Drinking plenty of water (except at meal times)

Eat foods that aid digestion

  • Fermented foods, such as sauerkraut and kimchi
  • Onion and garlic
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric and curcumin
  • Probiotics (in supplement form or yogurt)

Want an extra digestive boost? Try this digestive tonic, an elixir of lemon, honey, turmeric and water:

Digestive Tonic

  • Mug of warm water (not boiling or too hot)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric

Mix together and drink daily.
